Hi Nate. I couldn't figure out how else to get this to you. I'm probably not the best person to ask about traveling, I'm a bit of a siterat, but I'll tell you what I know.

1. I'm not really sure what free hiking is. If you mean hitching, then yes. I don't do it, but I know PCVs who only travel by hitchhiking, or getting "lifti".

2. As far as I know, the only way here from Mozambique is a border crossing on the southeast coast of TZ, in the deep south, far from any major city or paved road; or by ferry on Lake Nyasa. I don't think there are cross-border buses and I know there isn't a train. There are some ruins along the south east coast (Kilwa Kiswani) if you're into that, otherwise there isn't much.

3. A week is about the most you'd want for Zbar, it's cool, but not very big. On my trip I did a spice tour (fun) spent a few days in Stone Town (a must) and a few days on the beach. Go North coast if you want more a party scene, east coast if you want quiet. Jozani forest is good too. They have guided hikes, rare primates, and its just a nice chill walk in the woods.

4. I would recommend Dar to Moshi or Arusha, you can maybe get a bus to Uganda from there, if not, you can definitely get one from Mwanza. Mwanza is nice anyway. Buses suck, though that route is paved and generally nice. I've heard horror stories about trains here. All the main tanimal parks are in the north, serengeti, arusha, ngorongoro.

5. Visas, idk. I want to say like, $50, extendable for 3 months.

6. Tanzania is pretty safe, but watch your back in Dar. Everyone has had shit happen to them in Dar. I got robbed in broad daylight. avoid anyone selling ferry tickets to zanzibar on the street. they are scammers, go to the ferry office.

I'm thinking about going through Namibia on my way to South Africa after I COS next year. I don't know much about it. Is there anywhere I should go? Anything I should see? Or just drive on through?

Hey Nate,
I am not the best person to ask about traveling either. I have only been in country for 4 months now...
I know that there is little free hiking. All of the better spots are now regulated by national parks. I live by mt. Hanang (4th largets mountain in tz) and even that you have to pay the government to hike.
I do not know anything about traveling outside the country or to zbar yet. I heard zbar is amzing and if you have the oppurtunity to go do it.
There are alot of national parks in the northern area of Tz. Also there is mt hanang which is a day climb and you can do it for like 10 bucks american. I hope this helps. email me at socrswim06@gmail.com if you have any other questions
